Motorola HT Software Policy

Post by ranger88 »

Hi,

I recently bought an HT1550XLS from a motorola dealer. Before I bought that radio, I called Motorola customer support who told me it would not be a problem to sell me CPS for that radio, and I made it very clear that I did not want the radio unless I could program it myself.

When I applied for the "restricted" software license, I was denied. Called today and they said they couldn't sell it to me.

I have read that other users of this board had obtained the software from Motorola after a few phone calls.

Does anyone know who I need to talk to or have any pointers on how else to get the software legally?

Thanks,
Brock

The people you originally called to ask about software could probably help you, unless you got transfered to some overseas operator whereas they may have no clue.

Yeah, that's typical (M)otorola for you. Deny deny deny......

If it's only a 1 time programming, you could get it programmed at a local MSS. Or, as you may already know, that radio is FPP with the FPP battery, almost eliminating the use of CPS (except signalling etc)

The only close (3.5 hour round trip) MSS to my house is horrible at programming "complex" radios. It took me three visits to get my channels entered correctly and every time I update it, they mess something up... I bought the FPP Battery and I use it often, however I would like to be able to edit zones and alpha tags etc.

I learned long time ago to take names. Even keep a log of my calls to Moto and who I talked too. It REALLY Helps.
Just a simple little 4x6 spiral bound note book. I write down call time, duration, Operator name, and topic.
For Moto, So far Two, count them TWO enteries. :D

They only seem to like to license it to large self-maintaining users, governmental organizations, and public safety agencies.

Now, if you were to go down to your local county clerk and drop the couple of bucks to register "Ranger Ambulance Service" as a DBA company name...

Thanks for all of the fast replys!

I am located in the northern end of Denton County Texas.

As for the idea of "Ranger Amublance Service," That really sounds like a great idea, and I might give it a shot! :)

Good luck with that. I tried to get the CPS as well, but they wouldn't sell it even though I have a business. They didn't sell it for the municipality the radios were going to be programmed for. I can get the latest XTS software but not tyhe HT CPS...go figure!

No kidding, and do they really believe that selling to software to select customers only will solve the problem...

No, they believe that selling licenses to only MSSs and select customers will help protect their dealers' profits.

I don't buy that. If they truly had their dealer's best interest at heart, they wouldn't bid against their dealers and undercut them on mid-sized government tenders, and they would allow their dealers to sell encrypted radios, instead of forcing customers to buy from Motorola directly. I don't understand their mentality at all.

They don't understand themselves, why would you?

They'll understand US Bankruptcy court if they keep it up though. A shame.

Motorola does not care about its dealers profits. Look at all of the dealers selling stuff on eBay for $10 over cost (GTS, Henry Radio, etc). Luckily I don't have to compete on the service side as most of the outfits in my area are incapable of doing clean installs or servicing radios themselves
