How can I identify an encryption module that I removed from a waterlogged MTS2000?
It doesn't have any tags on it. 1 gold colored IC, and a small button on the back of it (little popple button like the PTT).
I cleaned up the board and put it in a known good MTS2000 and the radio boots... But I don't know the algorithm or any of that...
Also,
Are encryption modules that install in the MTS 2000 supposed to sit in a little plastic carrier or anything like that, or do they just snap into the socket and the shield goes over everything?

if there is only ONE gold IC, it's *NOT* an "XL" chip... it's either DVP or DES.
there is a rubber pad that protects/buffers the secure board... but the part # isn't in the manual that i looked at....

I can tell you that the rubber carrier of which they speak (other than holding it securely) is specifically
to keep that bubble button depressed, so it won't dump the key.
As for IDing the thing, if you have, say, a 3011-DX KVL, pop it in the radio and try to load it. If it works,
that should answer your question.... (eg. plain CFB-DES) If it says "PASSED", hold down the ON button
and it should say CFB 01. If it doesn't load its probably either DVP or DED.

If that's the case, pressing the ON button will say 8DB 01 (or 00, I forget) if its DES-XL. So check it out and let us know, OM....

The two NTN7280As I have in front of me have two gold ICs, and a black IC.

I know this post is 5 years old but just for the record, or for anyone that is still playing with the MTS2000 series radios, The NTN7280A , (DES-XL), I have in front of me has three chips, 2 small 28 pin and one large processor. One of the two smaller ones is gold top, and the other is just plain black. I believe it does not matter if you have both small chips gold or just one. That is just different chip manufacturer. When I pulled this board from the host radio there was nothing pressing against the button that I recall. It just plugged in and that was it...
