The only real "alert tone" that I can think of would be the Evacuation Tone. To activate this, you have to enable it in the RSS/CPS. On the radio, to transmit it, push in the PTT button, then hold in the Orange emergency button.

I know this works on conventional, but I have no idea about Trunking ...

I'm not sure about those Winegard antennas, but a source of a LOT of noise are those old "Shotgun" TV antennas...they look like an overgrown baseball bat. I had one, but ditched it, because whenever it was pointed in the direction of my ham antennas, the noise floor would be insane.

Yup, just what I thought.

When you have a conventional personality programmed with the same TX and RX frequency (Simplex), singletone works. But, when you have it programmed with a Direct frequency, singletone only works when not on direct.

Yeah, I have only had it setup on a repeater pair. When transmitting with the tone, it would only on the repeater in. If I placed the radio in direct, the tone would not transmit.

If you think about it, singletone was developed for repeater access, so hence the above situation.

I believe the singletone was only intended to open repeaters that required it on the astro series. Last time I looked, there is no decode option to the radio. Singletone will not work on simplex channels (you can program it, but the radio will not send it).

Generally speaking, when I charge my batteries, I let the thing start to beep first, once it's beeped two or 3 times, turn the radio off, and back on, then wait for it to start beeping again.

Then I'll throw it into a standard rapid charger, wait for the light to show green, which as explained ...

Yep, it depends on what you want.

The XTS5000 has yet to be hacked, but to my knowledge, the 3500 can. As the other guy said, the 3500 doesn't officially support trunking, but I know a few people who have the Nick radios that does trunking just fine.

The 3500 is also cheaper.

This is something I thought about awhile ago...all I did was just take my snow brush and whack the antenna a couple of times when the snow builds up. Seemed to work good for me.

Well if you're really serious about this and want to make it "realistic" to talking on a radio...

Get a Motorola desk mic. Rip out the guts. Then get a PC microphone, take the guts from that and put it in the Motorola desk mic.

Then, get yourself an old keyboard (USB), rip it apart...whatever key ...

It's been a while, but...

You need to go into Conventional MDF Capabilities, the in there, hit F2 "MDC Signalling Capabilities" and in there you can enable things like Status, Message, RTT, Radio Inhibit, Emergency, RAC, Call Alert, etc...

Well, on my MTX2000's, I can do PTT-ID, Emergency and Status/Messages.

As for hacking the radio with MTSX Lab, well, I can only assume this would work, as it works just fine on every other MTSX (except the MTS, of course), but you'd have to give it a try.

Just backup the radio's brains ...

The MTX-LS is just an LTR version of the Jedi, they were very much used in North America.

You forgot the MTX2000 radio as being part of the Jedi family. It's a UHF trunking portable.

As well, the XTS series are "technically" Jedis as well.

The HT1000 and the Visar radios both use the same RSS. The Visar was available in a Type II trunking version, so this means that the HT1000/Visar RSS "knows" what trunking is all about.

Well, NCIC is good, but problem is, regular people can't search on it.

If I buy a radio on ebay or a hamfest, there's no way I can tell if it's clean or not, besides going to the police station...and if it turns out that it is stolen, I'm SOL for the radio. Not really that useful.

Be warned you can't use lab with an MTS because of the toolproofing "feature".

No, you can't use a front display with a C4 codeplug...it's an entirely different controller. No software can make it work.

Yes, you're right...I forgot to mention that (it's been awhile).

For some reason, you cannot simply "enable" C/R in Lab. You must have a codeplug that does C/R from the factory. But, if you have the software to enable it, you've also got the software to force in another codeplug.
