How not to install a repeater...
Back to the subject: IMNTBHO, this is certainly stupid, bordering on criminal. And if it's on a county or other government building, who, if anybody, approved this siting and then signed off the installation? Hmmm, electrical inspector for grounding, building engineer/manager for safety, what else? ...

Maxar 80's
Maxars are pretty long in the tooth; don't look to sink a lot of money into them before you buy new. Maxars use crystals; you should be able to get them from ICM (I recommend) or Bomar (never dealt with them). $15 or $20 per crystal? Tuneup is pretty simple with basic service monitor & the manua...

The itty-bitty palm mic? (note to self; do NOT insert naughty label about this mic, comparing it to fluffy kittens and such...)
Open it with a BFH. Then attach a new one to the end of the cord. Then replace the ratty coil cord.

VX-180 question...
Can you call the head of dispatch center and get that info? It seems like a reasonable request to make. Seems to me 'twould be in interest of dispatch to not have you responding to false page-outs. Don't know yet what you can do to the radio to fix it; that will depend on the other answers that come...

VX-180 falsing
That's the point of asking you for the tones of the other agency; we can't help you without more information; maybe one of your tones is too close to one of the other agency's and the Vertex decoder is too wide. Maybe the transmission from dispatch is overdriven and causing distortion in your Vertex...

What are the two pairs of tones that are actually setting off your pager, and what pair is programmed into the pager?

Wow. Condolences to any family that loses a member because of this. But first. What is the real (not supposed, but the actual) structure of the system? Receiver or what? What??
Well, nmfire10 and motoman have the better initial idea; what SHOULD the system be doing? This is where a lot of things can happen; systems don't get PMed properly, or at all, or whatever, and each portion of the system degrades a bit, and the net effect is a general loss of capability, without any ...

Yes, John, you are going in the right direction. First, tho, what is the form of their current communictions system? Repeater? Simplex base? Radio close to dispatch, or far away? I'm gonna hazard a guess that you'll be looking at a 'voted receiver' system; two or several receivers scattered around t...

I haven't done very much ever with the Knwd 805 series, but IIRC, it doesn't have much in the way of interfacing; esp. getting RX audio out thru the mic jack might involve more modification than you're comfy with. Here's my suggestion: pull out the Moxy, open it up by sliding the cover off and then ...

No, you're not missing anything; the two main reasons most VHF stuff comes with PL259 connectors is A) they aren't >>as bad<< at VHF as they are at UHF & 800, and B) they're a bloody lot cheaper than N connectors, both to buy & to install. Chuk KB4MDZ Did some research on the above connector...

The 4010 is a nice little console unit; I've installed a couple of them and they're fairly straightforward. Nine freqs. is a good level for the 4010. Any more & you would want to step up the chain of complexity to a 'big' console. The Zetron Model 25 is just a paging encoder; you set up the each...
